morningpost,february7,1804.signedc.l.lambsendsthepoembothtowordsworthandmanningin1803.hesaystomanning:—"didisendyouanepitaphiscribbleduponapoorgirlwhodiedatnineteen?—agoodgirl,andaprettygirl,andaclevergirl,butstrangelyneglectedbyallherfriendsandkin….brief,andpretty,andtender,isitnot?isendyouthis,beingtheonlypieceofpoetryihavedonesincethemusesallwentwitht.m.[thomasmanning]toparis."

theyoungladywasmarydruittofwimbornewhodiedofconsumptionin1801.theversesarenotonhertombstone.aletterfromlambtohisfriendrickman(seecanonainger'sedition),showsthatitwasforrickmanthatthelineswerewritten.lambdidnotknowmarydruitt.writingtorickmaninfebruary,1802,lambsendsthesecondepitaph:—"yourownprose,ornakedlytheletterwhichyousentme,whichwasinsomesortanepitaph,woulddobetteronhergravestonethanthecoldlinesofastranger."
