[thisletterisusuallydated1824,butithinkitwaswrittenearlier.foronereason,hartleycoleridgewasnotinlondoninthatyear,andforanother,thereareseveralphrasesintheeliaessay"tworacesofmen"(printedinthelondonmagazine,december,1820)thataresosimilartosomeinthisletterthatiimaginethelettertohaveestedthesubjectoftheessay,thecompositionofwhichimmediatelyfollowedit.thus,intheessayweread:—
