dearj.p.c.,—iknowhowzealouslyyoufeelforourfriends.t.coleridge;andiknowthatyouandyourfamilyattendedhislecturesfourorfiveyearsago.heisinbadhealthandworsemind:andunlesssomethingisdonetolightenhismindhewillsoonbereducedtohisextremities;andeventhesearenotinthebestcondition.iamsurethatyouwilldoforhimwhatyoucan;butatpresentheseemsinamoodtodoforhimself.heprojectsanewcourse,notofphysic,norofmetaphysic,noranewcourseoflife,butanewcourseoflecturesonshakspearandpoetry.thereisnomanbetterqualified(alwaysexceptingnumberone);butiampre-engagedforaseriesofdissertationsonindiaandindia-pendence,tobecompletedattheexpenseofthecompany,iniknownot(yet)howmanyvolumesfoolscapfolio.iambusygettingupmyhindoomythology;andforthepurposeiamoncemoreenduringsouthey'scurse.tobeserious,coleridge'sstateandaffairsmakemeso;andthereareparticularreasonsjustnow,andhavebeenanytimeforthelasttwentyyears,whyheshouldeed.hewilldosowithalittleencouragement.ihavenotseenhimlately;andhedoesnotknowthatiamwriting.
