obrother!wheniwasforgetful,mytruegurushowedmetheway.
thenileftoffallritesandceremonies,ibathednomoreinthe
holywater:
thenilearnedthatitwasialonewhowasmad,andthewhole
worldbesidemewassane;andihaddisturbedthesewisepeople.
fromthattimeforthiknewnomorehowtorollinthedustin
obeisance:
idonotringthetemplebell:
idonotsettheidolonitsthrone:
idonotworshiptheimagewithflowers.
itisnottheausteritiesthatmortifythefleshwhichare
pleasingtothelord,
whenyouleaveoffyourclothesandkillyoursenses,youdonot
pleasethelord:
themanwhoiskindandwhopractisesrighteousness,whoremains
passiveamidsttheaffairsoftheworld,whoconsidersall
creaturesonearthashisownself,
heattainstheimmortalbeing,thetruegodiseverwithhim.
