whilefrostywindsblawinthedrift,

bentothechimlalug,

igrudgeaweethegreat-folk'sgift,

thatlivesaebienan'snug:

itentless,andwantless

theirroomyfire-side;

buthanker,andcanker,

toseetheircursedpride.

it'shardlyinabody'spow'r

tokeep,attimes,fraebeingsour,

toseehowthingsareshar'd;

howbesto'chielsarewhilesinwant,

whilecoofsoncountlessthousandsrant,

andkennahowtowair't;

but,davie,lad,ne'erfashyourhead,

tho'wehaelittlegear;

we'refittowinourdailybread,

aslang'swe'rehaleandfier:
