themoreiconsiderthismightytail,themoredoideploremyinabilitytoexpressit.attimestherearegesturesinit,which,thoughtheywouldwellgracethehandofman,remainwhollyinexplicable.inanextensiveherd,soremarkable,occasionally,arethesemysticgestures,thatihaveheardhunterswhohavedeclaredthemakintofree-masonsignsandsymbols;thatthewhale,indeed,bythesemethodsintelligentlyconversedwiththeworld.noraretherewantingothermotionsofthewhaleinhisgeneralbody,fullofstrangeness,andountabletohismostexperiencedassailant.dissecthimhowimay,then,ibutgoskindeep;iknowhimnot,andneverwill.butifiknownoteventhetailofthiswhale,howunderstandhishead?muchmore,howcomprehendhisface,whenfacehehasnone?thoushaltseemybackparts,mytail,heseemstosay,butmyfaceshallnotbeseen.buticannotcompletelymakeouthisbackparts;andhintwhathewillabouthisface,isayagainhehasnoface.
