perhapsaverylittlethoughtwillnowenableyoutoaccountforthoserepeatedwhalingdisasters—somefewofwhicharecasuallychronicled—ofthismanorthatmanbeingtakenoutoftheboatbytheline,andlost.for,whenthelineisdartingout,tobeseatedthenintheboat,islikebeingseatedinthemidstofthemanifoldwhizzingsofasteam-engineinfullplay,wheneveryflyingbeam,andshaft,andwheel,isgrazingyou.itisworse;foryoucannotsitmotionlessintheheartoftheseperils,becausetheboatisrockinglikeacradle,andyouarepitchedonewayandtheother,withouttheslightestwarning;andonlybyacertainself-adjustingbuoyancyandsimultaneousnessofvolitionandaction,canyouescapebeingmadeamazeppaof,andrunawaywithwheretheall-seeingsunhimselfcouldneverpierceyouout.
