south-eastwardfromthecape,offthedistantcrozetts,agoodcruisinggroundforrightwhalemen,asailloomedahead,thegoney(albatross)byname.assheslowlydrewnigh,frommyloftyperchatthefore-mast-head,ihadagoodviewofthatsightsoremarkabletoatyrointhefaroceanfisheries—awhaleratsea,andlongabsentfromhomeasifthewaveshadbeenfullers,thiscraftwasbleachedliketheskeletonofastrandedwalrus.alldownhersides,thisspectralappearancewastracedwithlongchannelsofreddenedrust,whileallhersparsandheringwerelikethethickbranchesoftreesfurredoverwithhoar-frost.onlyherlowersailswereset.awildsightitwastoseeherlong-beardedlook-outsatthosethreemast-heads.theyseemedcladintheskinsofbeasts,sotornandbepatchedtheraimentthathadsurvivednearlyfouryearsofcruising.standinginironhoopsnailedtothemast,theyswayedandswungoverafathomlesssea;andthough,whentheshipslowlyglidedcloseunderourstern,wesixmenintheaircamesonightoeachotherthatwemightalmosthaveleapedfromthemast-headsofoneshiptothoseoftheother;yet,thoseforlorn-lookingfishermen,mildlyeyeingusastheypassed,saidnotonewordtoourownlook-outs,whilethequarter-deckhailwasbeingheardfrombelow.
