itwasnotverylongafterspeakingthegoneythatanotherhomeward-boundwhaleman,thetown-ho,[1]wasencountered.shewasmannedalmostwhollybypolynesians.intheshortgamthatensuedshegaveusstrongnewsofmobydick.tosomethegeneralinterestinthewhitewhalewasnowwildlyheightenedbyacircumstanceofthetown-ho'sstory,whichseemedobscurelytoinvolvewiththewhaleacertainwondrous,invertedvisitationofoneofthosesocalledjudgmentsofgodwhichattimesaresaidtoovertakesomemen.thislattercircumstance,withitsownparticularaccompaniments,formingwhatmaybecalledthesecretpartofthetragedyabouttobenarrated,neverreachedtheearsofcaptainahaborhismates.forthatsecretpartofthestorywasunknowntothecaptainofthetown-hohimself.itwastheprivatepropertyofthreeconfederatewhiteseamenofthatship,oneofwhom,itseems,communicatedittotashtegowithromishinjunctionsofsecrecy,butthefollowingnighttashtegorambledinhissleep,andrevealedsomuchofitinthatway,thatwhenhewaswakenedhecouldnotwellwithholdtherest.nevertheless,sopotentaninfluencedidthisthinghaveonthoseseameninthepequodwhocametothefullknowledgeofit,andbysuchastrangedelicacy,tocallitso,weretheygovernedinthismatter,thattheykeptthesecretamongthemselvessothatitnevertranspiredabaftthepequod'smain-mast.interweavinginitsproperplacethisdarkerthreadwiththestoryaspubliclynarratedontheship,thewholeofthisstrangeaffairinowproceedtoputonlastingrecord.
