poorcharleslloydcametomeaboutafortnightago.hetooktheopportunityofmr.hawkescomingtolondon,andithinkathisrequest,tocomewithhim.itseemedtome,andheacknowledgedit,thathehadcometogainalittletimeandalittlepeace,beforehemadeuphismind.hewasagooddealperplexedwhattodo—wishingearnestlythathehadneverenteredintoengagementswhichhefelthimselfunabletofulfill,butwhichonsophia'saccounthecouldnotbringhimselftorelinquish.icouldgivehimlittleadviceorcomfort,andfeelingmyowninabilitypainfully,eagerlysnatchedataproposalhemademetogotosouthey'swithhimforadayortwo.hethenmeanttoreturnwithme,whocouldstayonlyonenight.whilethere,heatonetimethoughtofgoingtoconsultyou,butchangedhisintentionandstayedbehindwithsouthey,andwroteanexplicitlettertosophia.icameawayonthetuesday,andonthesaturdayfollowing,lastsaturday,receiv'daletterdatedbath,inwhichhesaidhewasonhiswaytobirmingham,—thatsoutheywasaccompanyinghim,—andthathewentforthepurposeofpersuadingsophiatoascotchmarriage—igreatlyfeared,thatshewouldneverconsenttothis,fromwhatlloydhadtoldmeofhercharacter.butwaitedmostanxiouslytheresult.sincethenihavenothadoneletter.forgod'ssake,ifyougetanyintelligenceoforfromchaslloyd,communicateit,foriammuchalarmed.
